Six day weeks were about to become mandatory when I left. Management seemed to have a very poor understanding of when rush periods would be in the future, and the screeners not lucky enough to be off would be swamped (relevant to both holidays/events/seasons and by hours in the day). We worked 9 hour days, except there were 6 hours mandatory that you either could choose or would be assigned if you failed to choose. They instructed our Lead Supervisors and Supervisors to report any "concerning" dialogue they overheard, much like the NKVD in Soviet Russia or a tattling elementary school classmate. Immediately, it became evident that they weren't interested in how their employees felt. It is evident that the company tries to enhance things (which is appreciated), but the difficulties of the job is never diminished (meaning the hardship remains).Īfter all said and done, the pay/benefits are not horrible when compared with other entry jobs and more physically - more.They took over a previous government contract and reduced our pay but gave us more responsibilities. I ignored the term "high turnover" prior to working, and didn't realize that it's not on TSO is a high turnover job, I believe for the reasons above (But much of it comes with the position, not the company). The hardest part of the job can be the odd hours, dealing with difficult passengers, growing fatigue, leaders who borderline (and cross the line) abuse their authority, misleading communication/moves from the company (seems to come from good-intention to make things seem better, but it results in trust of the company), and sometimes co-workers who have uncontrolled gossips and are careless for others. Issues do arise, but it is resolvable through management.
In busy seasons, the stress level can get quite high and that's when work culture can get quite negative. Generally, people are there to help and are kind. Work culture can really depend on the people you work with (like everywhere else). The morning shifts starts around 3-4am, and it can be exhausting if you're not getting enough sleep (even if you do, I think the body's circadian rhythm is not designed to wake up at 2am). The job itself is not difficult, but the odd work hours for many can be much tiresome. Working as a Transportation Security Officer is not for everyone, but for some it can serve as a starting point for career advancement. Take this job if your looking for a filler, for the mean time, but don't make this as your career. The turn around of this job is very high.
Working for TSA as a Transportation Officer was not a hard job at all but, the pressure of having 2 Managers (TSA and VMD) up your back becomes very stressful. I have seen some officers that were promoted and some of them are not worthy of the position because of laziness and their inability to handle stress. When promoting, management should look at employees' work ethic as well as how well the employee can handle difficult and stressful situations. Promoting within the company is difficult because it is very competitive. There are some Supervisors and Manager that play favoritism which was hard to work with. Management seems to take rumors and act on it rather than taking in the facts. PTO was lessened by your seniority or hire date. I understand that a new company is taking over but some benefits that the company says they are giving their employees does not add up to what they earned. When the company took over they lowered everyone's pay rate, demoted a lot of leadership personnel as well as not hiring some officers. VMD Corp is a new company that took over the contract in Kansas City Missouri (2020). VMD works with a point system and if you get 4 points you get a suspension or verbal write up. If you do then you will be put on the list and accumulate points. Employees need to be punctual and you can't be 1 minute late. Typical day at work is coming in as early as 3 am sometimes 2:30am if flight schedules are early.
